Joins CT Merchants in Saving

The Retail Merchants Association of New Hampshire has teamed with FEL and Resident Power to offer discounted electricity supply rates.

President and CEO Nancy C. Kyle told RMANH members, “If your business’s electrical costs are $1500 a month or lower, or it uses 10,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) per month or less, it would do well with RMANH’s Resident Power program.  This is available to both residential and commercial customers, and is even a benefit that retailers can offer their employees. If your energy costs are higher than $1500 a month, a business would benefit from a private analysis with Freedom Energy, where a plan is tailored for your business.”

RMANH joins the Connecticut Retail Merchants Association as one of New England’s proactive professional associations bringing retailers—and thus consumers—easily accessible, simple to execute savings on energy bills through Freedom Energy Logistics, and now, Resident Power.

The pledge we make to each and every one of our customers is to seek the lowest cost energy to meet their needs and comfort level in the market.  And we take that pledge seriously.

We particularly relish the chance to toot the horn and bring out the red carpet when unexpected perks come our way.  One of those was the night of August 31 when our Direct to Grid customers on the Real-time market received 4 free hours of electricity.

Add that to the zero hours already accumulated, and we may be in for a record year in 2012!

In a July segment of ABC-affiliate WMUR’s “NH’s Business,” Bart Fromuth introduced host Fred Kocher to the beauties of Real-Time pricing. Taken by the concept of zero hours, Fred asked incredulously, “You have customers who don’t pay a ‘dime’ for the electricity they use,” –not once, but twice!NH Business - WMUR

CN Brown Teams with FEL to Create Electricity Supply Option for Maine September 27, 2012

CN Brown, a prominent name in Maine and New Hampshire heating oil and gasoline markets, has applied for a Maine electric supplier license to serve all customer classes in Central Maine Power (CMP) and Bangor Hydro Electric (BHE) territories. Recognizing the energy expertise and track record of Freedom Energy Logistics, the company has contracted FEL to act as its procurement manager.

CN Brown has been a leading fuel oil supplier in the two northern New England states since 1948 and has earned a long reputation for its leadership in providing energy options.  Now, through CN Brown Electricity, customers will be able to buy their electricity supply at discounts estimated between 10 and 15%.

FEL will guide CN Brown through processes to join ISO-NE, help educate managers on load management, and oversee strategies to ensure lower supply prices for CN Brown customers.

Although CN Brown Electricity’s application to the Maine PUC encompasses all customer classes, the initial emphasis is expected to be on residential and small business accounts. When customers enroll with CN Brown, they will see no change in their electricity service. Their lines will still be serviced by their current utility; their bill will still be paid to their current utility. The only changes they see will be a notation on the bill naming CN Brown Electricity as their new supplier and, of course, measurable savings.

“I see this as a real step forward for Maine consumers,” says Gus Fromuth, Managing Director of FEL.  “In the past year, there has been a rush by some new companies to take advantage of deregulated markets. And while some of them have done very well, I think consumers will feel assured that they’re in good hands by the reputation of CN Brown, and even by most people’s proximity to its Big Apple Stores and CN Brown heating fuel outlets.  There’s still something to be said for hometown service.”

In business since 1948, CN Brown sees the collaboration with FEL as affirmation of their company philosophy of “Moving forward to provide legendary service and quality products.”

CN Brown Electricity, is expected to go on line around November 1.

Freedom Energy Logistics (FEL) was named a Top 10 company To Watch in Business NH’s September issue.

“We were recognized for our rapid growth, innovation and dedication to customer service,” says Gus Fromuth.  “It’s quite an honor.”

FEL’s recent earnings have been spurred by a number of factors, including a large spike in the retail brokerage business for natural gas and electricity, as well as solid growth in the wholesale procurement division. “We have really started to make a name for ourselves throughout New Hampshire and greater New England. In only a few short years we have grown from a small company specializing in Direct to Grid wholesale procurement for end users, to a major player in the Northeastern energy markets, serving customers ranging from large retail suppliers to small manufacturers with a wide range of products and services,” says Fromuth

FEL expects to close 2012 with a work force growth of 40% and revenue increase of 15%.

“We’ve tried to keep our growth measured,” says Bart Fromuth, Vice President of Operations.  “and we’re proud of how we build relationships with our clients. We’re not going to sacrifice any of our hands-on service just to increase our numbers.”

The FEL team will accept its award at a banquet in Concord October 15th.

Resident Power Surpasses First Year Expectations September 27, 2012

Helps More Than 10,000 Small Electricity Accounts Save Real Money

FEL sister company Resident Power recently announced that it has reached 10,000 customers, far exceeding first-year projections. New Hampshire’s first electricity supply option for residents and small businesses, it remains the state’s only locally-owned electricity option for small consumers.

“The response has been fantastic,” says Bart Fromuth, Managing Director of RP and Vice President of Business Operations for sister company Freedom Energy Logistics (FEL).  “New Hampshire residents want to save every penny they can, and, honestly, some people have issues with their utility and are happy to have an alternative.”

Resident Power helps residents and small businesses save money on their electricity bills by building relationships with suppliers who sell their electricity at prices lower than PSNH. “Basically, we take large groups of small household and business accounts and pool them together for pricing with our supply partners.  Our partners love it because, to them, it is as if they are pricing one large account and they get to avoid the hassles and costs of customer acquisition. Our customers love it because they get low group pricing they can’t find anywhere else,” says Fromuth.

“Most of our contracts run for one year; however we do offer alternatives for those customers that cannot commit to 12 months.  Apartments and leaseholders for instance, find it difficult to fulfill a 12 month contract, so we offer them more flexible month to month arrangements. When the first customers come up for renewal later this fall, I expect very few will pull out of the program. Why would they? They’ve been saving an average of 8-10% over the course of the year, and it didn’t cost them much more than the 5 minutes it took to sign up. Now that the mystery has been taken out of the process and folks realize that their power won’t go out and the utility won’t treat them poorly for switching, we think people will feel much more comfortable telling their friends about us.

“With 10,000 experienced and confident customers under our belt, 2013 should be a big year for Resident Power.”

If you would like Resident Power to make a presentation about savings it can offer your employees, please contact Bart at bart.fromuth@felpower.com or call 603.232.9293.

Not Always the Popular Kid on the Playground June 12, 2012

Deregulation of New England’s energy market has brought about any number of benefits for its citizens and ratepayers by spawning competitive energy suppliers who have worked to reduce the cost and price of electricity and natural gas across the region.  As old hands in this region-wide energy market, we here at Freedom believe that when our customers are well served and prosper, we will, too.

But recently, we’ve been finding ourselves at odds with other competitive energy companies and sometimes, we just have to shake our heads. Why?  Because it seems counopeterintuitive that businesses whose very existence was brought about because deregulation ned competitive markets, now actively seek government intervention and protection for the sake of their own profits.

In this newsletter, we highlight some recent examples of this disturbing behavior in  New Hampshire, but our interest is region-wide.  (Reference our May newsletter’s reporton the End User Alliance Request for a regional economic impact study if New England nuclear plants are forced to shut down.)

In all cases, however, our response is the same:  Deregulation was undertaken to let the competitive marketplace work, therefore, it should be allowed to work.  Regulatory re-intervention to “fix” an evolving marketplace is unnecessary when the marketplace is already reordering itself. Not only are such efforts unnecessary but, perversely, they assault the original purpose of deregulation.

Not that we claim responsibility, but we can’t help but notice that forward-thinking companies managing energy costs with FEL are often recognized for their success.  Two that caught our eye this month are:

  • Cianbro, headquartered in Pittsfield, ME, was recently named by Engineering News-Record to the “Top 100 U.S. Contractors;” and,
  • Southern New Hampshire University was selected by FAST magazine to the “World’s Top 50 Most Innovative Companies.”

Has your company been honored?  We want to share it! Send your info to Media@Felpower.com

FEL Goes to Bat for New Hampshire Self-Suppliers June 12, 2012

Recent updating to Electric Renewable Portfolio Standards nearly required NH Self-Suppliers to double-down on Renewable Energy Credits (RECs).

Quietly, Senate Energy & Natural Resources committee leaders sought to add to its definition of Provider of Electricity “a nonresidential customer meeting its retail load through direct purchase from the wholesale electricity market…” The addition would, in effect, have required NH Self-Suppliers to obtain and retire RECs as traditional providers do.

The FEL legal team pointed out to the Committee that NH Self-Supply customers, including St. Anselm College, the Union Leader, New Hampshire Industries, Elektrisola, Luminescent Systems, RJ Finlay, Highliner Foods and New England Wire Technologies, already obtain an indigenous renewal component of approximately 16% in the power they buy directly from ISO-NE.

NH Self-Suppliers not only save 10-15% on electric bills by using wholesale procurement, but they have saved more than $500,000 over the past 4 years in saved RPS requirements—money they have been able to invest back into jobs, physical plant and equipment,  thus making their businesses more competitive.

Due largely to a drop in natural gas prices, ISO-NE has seen the average price of electric energy drop by 6% in 2011.

But due to even more savvy management techniques and smart energy-saving moves, more than half of FEL’s Direct to Grid accounts beat that 6% average!

Watch this page, folks; we want to help increase your bottom line.
